A Virginia-Inspired Seafood and Wine Tasting at Home

Hey there! I just have to share something from my heart. This past 4th of July, I found myself on a mini-vacation in Virginia, spending the day at Crimson Lane Vineyard with my dear cousin who now calls Virginia home. The views, the wine, and the entire atmosphere—it was like a dream. As I wandered through the vineyards and relaxed in the cozy tasting rooms, I started thinking about how I could bring a little of that magic back home for a summer gathering.

So here’s what I’m imagining: a backyard seafood BBQ and wine tasting. Which can honestly be perfect for any summer occasion—whether it’s Labor Day, a birthday, a girls’ night, or just a festive family dinner. I want to create a cozy, inviting setup with neutral-colored sofas and chairs outside. If I can, I'll even bring some of my indoor furniture out. The lived-in feel of Crimson Lane’s tasting rooms, with their antique pieces and rich woods, made me feel so welcome, and I want to capture that same warmth.

Since my backyard doesn’t have those stunning Virginia mountain views, I thought it might be fun to invite guests to bring a printed photo of their favorite summer moment or a special trip. I could even print and frame some of the photos I took while in Virginia so they can serve as artwork for after the BBQ! This way, we can create our own beautiful, scenic moments that can spark fun conversations.

Now, let’s talk about the most important part - food and wine. The wineries in Virginia do this amazing thing where they pair their wines with fresh seafood—grilled fish, char-grilled oysters, and maybe even lobster if I’m feeling fancy. It’s not something we see a lot in Atlanta when you think of BBQ in the south but it’s a brilliant and refreshing combination, and I’m definitely adding it to my menu. For wine, I will opt for 3 to 4 different Virginia Estate wines over store-bought wines. I checked with their staff and they suggested I give them a call to share my menu and they can suggest complimentary pairings (which is a benefit over going the store-bought route). For dessert, I’m thinking of a savory bread pudding with ice cream—something rich with more substance that also balances out the lightness of seafood and that hits both the sweet and savory notes.

For decor, I’m keeping it simple. The wine, food, and table setting will be the stars. A few soft tea candles in votives as the evening sets in will make the tablescape feel moody, some freshly grown flowers for a lovely aroma that I can also let guests take home, and a bread basket with a fresh loaf. This event would be all about creating a space that feels comfortable, and inviting, and makes everyone want to stay and enjoy the evening a little longer.

One of my favorite parts of my winery tour was the live music. While I can opt for a nice acoustic Apple Music playlist, I’m thinking of asking my nephew, who’s a fantastic guitarist and songwriter, to play for us. There’s something so special about involving people you know which can be more personal and memorable than a playlist or hired band.

I am still daydreaming about my trip so much so it’s got me thinking if Virginia would be an ideal home for a future Homebody & Co. venue space...hmmm. For now, I’m just excited to bring a bit of the coastal charm from my trip back to my own backyard and share it with friends and family. Summer is all about these simple joys, good company, and making beautiful memories together. So let’s embrace the coastal vibes, pop open a bottle of wine, and enjoy the best that summer has to offer.

I might even host this at L’Eau Hill House or Norwood Vineyards in late summer. Both places have that welcoming, lived-in feel that makes everyone want to linger. These venues are such a big part of what Homebody & Co. is all about—creating spaces where people can come together, relax, and celebrate life’s special moments. Here’s to creating our own magical moments!
